Eller skulle han kliva på den mjuka mattan upp för trappstegen. Ålderns rätt tog inte ut vanans kraft. Det blev trappan.
Lätt andfådd nådde han sitt mål. Den gröna dörren. Han hann inte trycka på dörrknappen som vanligt förrän mobiltelefonen vibrerade dovt i fickan. När han såg numret i rutan ökade pulsen. Han blev sjukligt röd i ansiktet och kände att det inte fanns någon annan utväg än att sätta sig på det sista trappsteget fram till målet.
